To be eligible for the CFE exam, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of professional work experience in a field related to fraud examination, accounting, auditing, law, investigation, or criminal justice. Additionally, applicants must agree to abide by the ACFE Code of Professional Ethics.

The CFE exam consists of four parts covering: Fraud Prevention, Detection and Investigation; Financial Transactions and Fraud Schemes; Law; and Investigation. Each section tests your knowledge of fraud examination techniques, financial accounting, legal principles, and investigative procedures.

You must achieve a score of 70% or higher on each of the four exam parts to pass the CFE exam. If you fail any section, you can retake only that specific part without having to retake the entire exam.

The CFE exam is comprehensive and takes approximately 6 hours total to complete across the four parts. You have 3.5 hours allocated for the first two parts combined and 2.5 hours for the final two parts, though you can manage your time across sections as needed.

The CFE exam fee is typically around $300-400 for ACFE members and higher for non-members, though pricing may vary by region and membership status. The exam is offered year-round through Pearson VUE testing centers, allowing you to schedule your exam at a convenient time.
