To be eligible for the CEP exam, you must have a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in exercise science, exercise physiology, kinesiology, or related field. Alternatively, you can qualify with a bachelor's degree in any field plus specific coursework in exercise science and clinical experience requirements.
The ACSM CEP exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions that must be completed within 3 hours. This time allocation allows approximately 1.2 minutes per question for test-takers to answer and review their responses.
The exam covers exercise physiology, pathophysiology, clinical exercise physiology, health appraisal and fitness testing, exercise prescription, and program management and administration. It also includes content on human behavior and psychology as it relates to exercise and wellness programs.
ACSM uses a scaled scoring system, and you must achieve a scaled score of 70 or higher to pass the CEP exam. The raw scores are converted to a scale of 0-100 to account for any variations in exam difficulty across different test administrations.
The ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist certification is valid for three years from the date of successful exam completion. After three years, you must renew your certification through continuing education credits or by retaking the exam to maintain your active CEP credential.
